Project Proposal
In the duration of this module I had come to my third project for Photography Assignments. This project is based on the theme of still life, where I am photographing around the idea of still life and incorporating that into my images. Still life objects are everywhere, its my art to turn these everyday objects into My part in this assignment is to create a series of images that use the main body of the theme within the images. The brief for this project remains open then pushing and allowing me to go into any direction.
Conducting research will be my next step within the project. From researching I will be able to develop ideas and have a formation to work towards. Developing ideas will then allow me to work towards a set of 6 images with my final idea.
For this assignment, my initial idea is to capture fashion images in a creative part of London. Therefore making my idea based around street fashion. Researching different photographers and different forms of street fashion will allow me to develop my idea on this base, this will also allow me to understanding and ideas to aid me in my progression within the project.
For the final outcome of this project my plan is to have a digital outcome of six images that portray street fashion photography. I would like them to be simplistic yet visually pleasing.
My initial thoughts for capturing my images were to work in a digital format as this will allow me capture images quick on the go as well as reviewing them.
Development into the project will now include:

What is fashion photography
Fashion photography is a genre that is dedicated to show casing clothing/fashion items
Mood-board
This mood board was created to explore the ideas based around fashion photography. Also allowing me to be guided into specific genres of fashion photography by visual research. Images in the mood board had been outsourced from search engines such as Google. There are mixes of street fashion photography and studio based images that will allow me to deliberate, whether my preference is for location shoots or studio based photography. Once created the mood board had been presented into a peer discussion group where ideas would be discussed and expanded, towards a final outcome idea. Presenting my mood board I had explained that currently my idea is to shoot street fashion photographs in a location yet not chosen, however with the use of a digital camera although it seems interesting to shoot these images on film it would be to time consuming to develop and test these images. I had gained a positive reply/feedback from the group discussion as my peers had indicated to me that this would be a new opportunity as I am not particularly confident with approaching street photography. This will be a difficulty however once this obstacle had been over-come it will have a creative outcome.
Photographer Research
When initially starting researching the idea of fashion. I had taken it upon myself to look into online magazines such as Vouge, where I had gained the initial inspiration for my idea. Many of these top listed fashion icons have been shoot in a location or whilst out. This is an aspect I wanted to add into my photography, which is to shoot on location with no props but my camera. The images indicate my research and aspects that stood out to me the most having an impression on my idea which will again later show in more depth in my final images.
Photographer: William Klein
This is one of many famous images by William Klein; Smoking Veil. I am fascinated to know how he has done all of this within a few hours. It is very clear to see what is happening in the image by one glance at the image. Within the image there is a beautiful woman. Also this young woman is smoking a cigarette with a veil on her head. The young lady seems to be wearing dark lipstick and as it is so dark I am assuming that it is a colour such as red or darker. She is holding a cigarette in her right hand. As you can clearly tell this image looks to be in a studio format. The photograph has such a powerful presence itself, the fact that the woman seems to be so poised and perfect in this just makes you spellbound to it. The artist Klein has taken the image in black and white film making it have a greater impact than a colour image would. When looking at it I feel that Klein may have done some form of dodging and burning in the darkroom, because of the fact that the image has such a powerful presence it makes you wonder what the meaning behind this image may be. I adore the way that the artist has possibly done some dodging and burning, I think this because of the fact that there is a high contrast with in it, although I feel that I see a grey tint you can see the visible difference between the white and black. There is a hidden mood to this image and to me it feels to be excitement something that is coming from the artist Klein himself. It is a vision of his mind at the time to the audience. The fact that this image is black and white it adds to the mood and again the mood is created by the artist/ photographer himself. What makes me draw to the image is the smoke, the fact that he has captured such a mass of smoke in this image.
Idea update/ Shoot set up
For this project I have come to the final idea of conducting street photography. I will be photographing images of the people of Camden town in London, as it is a creative and unique part of London. I will be able to capture creative yet sublet pictures here in London. I will be photographing images using my digital camera Canon 5D Mark iii, and I will use a standard lens of 10-125mm as it would allow me to zoom in when need be. I will shoot all my images during the day, as working in ambient lighting is an aspect of photography that interests me.
My shoot plan will be free handed; I will go into London free handed with my camera and approach people of the town and try my luck. This would be the best option rather than having an aspect planned. It would let my images be creative and realistic. I will stand at a distance that will able me to get a full frame from head to toe.

- Manual setting for image shooting
- Raw photographing if possible - then converted into JPEG (easy handling) and editing not to mention easier to contact sheet
- little use of conventional lighting
- Majority ambient lighting based photographs
Contact Sheet:
This is my contact sheet for my final shoot images; Here I have used a 5D mark iii to shoot my images. I have taken these photographs on location and did not use more than use a camera as this would have been too much equipment to take into London while I was shooting on my own. I have used 1/125 and lower shutter speed had been constantly changing due to the lighting. However my iso had been on 400 and higher to a maximum use of 1200 and has my aperture been at 5.0f.stop.
Narrowed Down Images
From the images that I had shot I then needed to narrow then down as it would then be easier for me to pick an image for my finals. All of the images that I have chosen are those that I think are the better of those in the contact sheet.
- Favourite images from shoot
- Most impactful
- My most creative images
Final chosen and edited images
For my final image I had picked the image that was most appealing to me , I have called this series of images Market appeal, as in the images the subjects are calm and relaxed and within their own environment. For these images the colour had been desaturated as I wanted the images to have a used/worn feel to them. I feel that this image works best in colour as I did have a look at what the image would look like in black and white but it does not do justice to the image making it dull and taking the life out of the image. The desaturated colour in the image just adds to it bring out what the image should feel like.

Photography evaluation
This has been the final project for the year in the module of photography assignments and yet again it has been another to be pleased with. This project was handed to me to work with the idea of creating a series of images that was based around the theme of fashion photography, this project has gone on to allow me to build on existing photography skills.
In the project I had to create a series of images, being able to create a series of images pushed my learning towards refining images and the way that I see my work.
Within the project there were strengths and weaknesses, when taking my images which was for my final set of images based on street fashion I felt as my weakness came into play as I found it difficult to approach those people who I would be photographing as they were people of the public, however I was able to push my creativity out into the playing field with street fashion and be able to create images that I was happy with in the outcome itself.
What went well for me in the project was the learning process and I was able to learn more about ambient lighting when outdoor shooting and understanding that it can be more difficult to work with but rewarding.
In terms of material I had not sourced any material however I had taken my images on a digital camera, which had been beneficial as I was constantly on the move when photographing my final images. The main adjustment I would make would be traveling with a monopod or tripod.
One factor that I would change which the outcome of the images would be I would have used a tripod or a monopod which would allowed to have a slower shutter speed and then that would have allowed the pictures to be more clear in quality.
In the project I do not think that I had taken my time thinking of new ideas I could have gone with.
Time management is a need that needs to be worked on as I have learnt from this project for future reference. Overall I have enjoyed this project I have been able to learn from it and develop a creative edge.
